China 1,2-Dichloropropane Market Watch: Tight Supply and Rising Prices

Market Report

Over the past few weeks, we have received noticeably more inquiries about 1,2-Dichloropropane (CAS 78-87-5). Buyers are asking two practical questions: is material available now, and how long would a new order take? From what we are seeing, immediate supply in China is tighter and reference prices have moved up quickly.

Availability, packaging and destination should be confirmed before a purchase is finalized.

Reference prices moved from RMB 500–600 to about RMB 1,200 per ton

Before July and the first part of August, the level we observed in the Chinese domestic market was approximately RMB 500–600 per ton. From the middle of August, price discussions began to change. Around September 16, some references received in our conversations were close to RMB 1,200 per ton.

Price note: These are market references from commercial conversations, not one uniform national quotation. Purity, quantity, packaging, payment, distance and delivery date can all change the final price.

Spot availability has fallen while production schedules extend

As prices rose, buyers began asking about availability before asking only about price. At present, we do not have a large volume of immediately available spot material. We have also been told that new factory orders are being scheduled into late October. Each delivery date must be confirmed order by order, based on quantity, production planning and logistics.

That has changed the way customers compare offers. A number on a quotation is only one part of the decision. Actual availability, a possible loading date and total delivered cost now matter just as much.

Demand is the main driver, with logistics adding pressure

Based on the customers and suppliers we have contacted, inquiries and purchase intentions have increased. Some buyers are starting discussions earlier because they are concerned about another price increase or a longer lead time. Demand is not the only factor, but it appears to be one of the main reasons behind the recent movement.

Logistics are also affecting the final delivered cost. Dangerous-goods transport, packaging, handling and route conditions can change the cost of a shipment. A domestic reference and an export delivered quotation should therefore not be compared until the included conditions are clear.

An anonymous South Asian customer illustrates why terms matter

A customer from South Asia told us that they had previously received the product through a European supply channel at roughly USD 520–550 per ton. During the same period, our reference quotation for drum packaging, container transport and a delivered condition was around USD 1,050 per ton.

We present this case anonymously and only to show how origin, packaging, timing and logistics can create a large difference between offers. It is not a verified uniform European market price, and the difference should not automatically be treated as profit. Freight, insurance, taxes, documentation and trade terms all affect a delivered quotation.

What buyers should confirm before requesting a quotation

For a useful quotation, buyers should provide the required specification, estimated quantity, packaging, destination port, trade term and target delivery date. For a hazardous chemical, the destination country's transport, documentation and import requirements should also be reviewed before booking.

A spot shipment and a scheduled production order are not the same product from a purchasing perspective. A lower number may refer to a different date, package or delivery condition. The better comparison is total landed cost together with supply reliability.

The next move will depend on the balance between supply and demand

If demand remains firm and factory schedules do not ease, short-term availability may stay tight. If additional capacity is released or buying slows, the market could move into a correction. For now, we prefer to describe the references and trend we observe rather than promise a future price.

Conclusion: confirm price, availability and lead time

Customers planning to buy 1,2-Dichloropropane should contact us to confirm the current quotation, available quantity and production schedule. We do not currently have a large spot volume, and the lead time for a new order must be confirmed case by case.
